We all know that exercise is essential to a healthy lifestyle. But did you know that an increase in overall fitness can boost the immune system, in turn, fighting off colds and infections?
It’s true! In a year-long study, published in the American Journal of Medicine, researchers found that walking for half an hour a day can cut your chances of getting a cold in half.
This is because exercising increases white blood cell count, specifically T-cells that are essential immune-boosting cells. It also increases blood and lymph flow as your muscles contract, and the circulation of immune cells, making them roam the body at a higher rate and at higher numbers.
It’s important to note that exercising is a preventative measure. It can be too taxing on your body to exercise when you have an infection.
Exercise makes you feel healthier and more energetic. A moderate exercise program can consist of:
- Bicycling with your children a few times a week
- Taking daily 20 to 30-minute walks
- Going to the gym every other day
- Playing golf regularly
- Gardening
Strategies to strengthen your immune system through exercise should focus on consistency, intensity, cardio, and strength training, and recovery time. Don’t forget to get outside!
